Burj Khalifa – Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Completed in 2009 and officially opened in 2010, the 2,722 ft. (829.8 m) Burj Khalifa (burj is Arabic for tower) is the world’s tallest structure. The building’s Y-shaped plan accommodates both residential and hotel occupancy. Its exterior design reflects elements of Islamic architecture, including the spiral minaret, which spirals and grows more slender with height. The scale of the building is evident in the 57 elevators and 8 escalators incorporated into its design, as well as the 2,909 stairs from the ground floor to the 160th level. From the top floors on a clear day, visitors can gaze across the Persian Gulf to see the shores of Iran.
