Flash Technology Announces FTW GPRS

Franklin, Tenn. (July 18, 2012) – Flash Technology does not have definite time frame regarding AT&T’s termination of their 2G network (FTW GPRS 172-3, 172-4, 174 and 174-2). We have heard from some AT&T modem vendors that the end of 2016 is a possible termination date. AT&T indicates declining 2G coverage in the following news release.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — AT&T Inc. wants customers using older 2G phones to upgrade. In recent weeks, the carrier has begun sending out notices to some customers still accessing the erstwhile cellular network to swap out their devices for newer ones that can run on 3G networks. “Your current, older-model 2G phone might not be able to make or receive calls and you may experience degradation of your wireless service in certain areas,” AT&T cautioned in the letter. An AT&T spokesman, Mark Siegel, said the carrier hoped to use some of the 2G spectrum for new technologies.

In addition, the vendor no longer stocks the 2G modem used in the FTW 174. We advise customers transition to Verizon and AT&T 3G FTW products by the end of the year. And estimate we have enough inventory to fill 2G orders until the end of 2012 and warranty replacements until the end of 2014.

When a currently installed 2G FTW GPRS has stopped communicating, special consideration should be taken. It’s possible the unit may be working but the area’s 2G network has been taken down or decreased in strength. Take the unit to a location with known 2G coverage and test before sending in for repair. If the unit is sent in and no problem is found, we will recommend purchase of a new 3G replacement. The 2G unit will be returned as a spare.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. We are committed to helping you through this process to limit or avoid downtime at each of your sites. Please let us know if you have any questions.
